The introduction will define dogmatics, describe the essence of Christianity, its foundation in revelation, the source of Christian doctrines, and sketch a scheme by which the principal heads of Christian doctrine may be suitably arranged.

The Subject Defined. Dogmatics is the systematic presentation of the doctrines of Christianity.

It is customary to divide the study of theology into four departments: exegetical, historical, systematic and practical. Dogmatics is a branch of systematic theology. It applies the results of exegetical study of the Bible and of the historical study of Christianity to the connected and orderly presentation of the truths of the Christian religion. The eminent German theologian, F. H. R. Frank, called his dogmatics "The System of Christian Truth." That is what dogmatics aims to be.

System is not simply arrangement, but such arrangement as shows the interrelation, the connection and dependence of the parts which constitute a whole. For example, the arrangement of doctrinal material, introduced by Melanchthon and in vogue for some time after the Reformation, under heads called Loci, did not constitute a system.

The name Dogmatics, first applied in the seventeenth century, came into general use in the eighteenth century, as in Buddeus' Institutiones Theologiae Dogmaticae.
